The flag is the identity of any people and nation and reflects the vitality of that nation. The Kurds now have their own official flag, which is the pride of all Kurdish citizens anywhere in the world. December 17, Kurdistan Flag Day, commemorates the first raising of the Kurdistan flag on January 22, 1946, when the Kurdistan Republic was proclaimed in the square of Mahabad. However, eleven months and four days later, on December 17, 1946, following the end of the Kurdistan Republic and the lowering of the flag by the Kurds themselves, the Kurdistan government came to an end.
In 2009, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) declared December 17 as Kurdistan Flag Day. On this day, all institutions in the Kurdistan Region celebrate with various activities. In 1999, the Kurdistan Parliament officially introduced the flag of the Kurdistan Regional Government.
